Shooting is a very
important part of my life.
I find a lot of enjoyment
in a trip to the range. The loud bangs, the fire flashes and the challenge of
accurate shooting, is both exciting and relaxing at the same time. I also take
comfort in knowing that I am able to defend myself if the police and military
are not available to do so.
My views and beliefs:
- Firearm ownership is
a right. A right protected under the Constitution of this country.
However; it is a right that if exercised, should be treated by you like a
privilege. Responsibility and safety are not an accident.
- A gun is a tool. Not
a Toy. Firearms should be treated with somewhat of a sense of respectful
- If you choose to own
firearms, weather for target shooting, hunting or self defense, you should
get properly instructed in the use of your guns, and then practice with
those guns. When it comes time to use your firearm, weather on a paper
target, a clay disk, a deer or an attacker, if you have not practiced, you
and consequently your gun will be ineffective and a danger to yourself and
innocent people around you.
- Thomas Jefferson: "If
you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns" Logical
thought at it's finest. Many things are illegal in this country, and
many of those illegal activities are continued without a second thought by
the criminal as to the fact that they are illegal. The largest fear of
those that would like to outlaw guns is fear of death at the hands of a
criminal with a gun. If guns are made to be illegal, and someone gets
in their mind that they are going to break our highest law and kill you, do
you honestly think that person will stop and think to themselves that they
will not use a gun to kill you because it is illegal, and so kill you with
something else? In that same line of thought, would you feel better
somehow about being killed with a knife, rather than a gun?
- To speak Mr.
Jefferson's above quote a little differently. To make firearms
illegal, would be to remove firearms from the hands of those who would only
use firearms for legal purposes.
- The shooting sports
are far more widespread that you think. Television and movies show the
side of evil only. If guns were a source of evil, and violence could
be averted with their destruction, believe me, I would be all for it.
But there is only one source of evil in this world, and that evil is not
caused by inanimate objects. The evil side of firearms in this country
is acted out by a very insignificant percentage of the legal gun
owning community. To not examine the big picture, and act
hastily on emotional impulse and try to ban firearms because of what you see
on the news, is to punish the many for the deeds of the very few.
- The problem with
firearms in today's society is those that hold them illegally.
Most of the guns you see on the news were not purchased by filling out a
form and having a criminal background check performed. They were
stolen, or smuggled. The persecution of illegal gun activity needs to
be the focus, and anti-gun people and pro-gun people need to work together
- If your argument
against guns is not their miss-use, but fear of accidents, then is comes
back to training and safety. Lock them up when not in use. Lock
them tight. Teach your children to never ever ever handle a gun of any
kind unless it is for the purpose of instruction and you are present and
instructing. It is no different than watching your child around a
bathtub. Dangers are ever present, and it is your responsibility to
protect your child.
